Its definitely a tragedy for those killed, however considering there were 13 people involved, I think the pilots did an amazing job to ensure the safety of their passengers despite the loss of 4 lives.

Such a sad tragedy for those lost.

Looking at the damage to the front of the machine that remained flyable - I’d agree with the “amazing job” comment regarding the injured, but surviving pilot.
Anyone killed is a tragedy, but that could have easily been 13 dead.

Keep the margins wide - the year is off to a terrible start. (This prang, the road toll, and drownings)

That footage is chilling. You can see the second aircraft sitting stationary in the bubble on a collision course. It almost looks like it'd have been somewhat visually obscured for the pilot due to the door pillar. Can't begin to imagine what they are going through; I hope they have plenty of support from within in the rotary community. Only other aircrew know how easily something like this can manifest when everything lines up the worst possible way. Truely terrible, but so close to being so much worse.

From John Orr-Campbell at PHS/ Sea World Helicopters:

“The tragic helicopter accident on the Southport Broadwater on 2 January 2023 has impacted many people, and we pay tribute to those that lost their lives,” he said.

“We also acknowledge the suffering of those that were injured.

“We have and continue to reach out directly to offer our deepest condolences, support and counselling to the families and passengers of both aircraft.”

Mr Orr-Campbell said the company was mourning the death of its chief pilot Mr Jenkinson, an English father-of-one who lived on the Gold Coast.

“I knew Ash personally for nine years. He was a fine man and a standout pilot with 6,210 hours of flying to his name,” the statement said.

“To lose a man and a pilot of Ash’s calibre is shocking in every sense of the word. I, along with all the staff at Sea World Helicopters, are gutted to the core.

“My heart aches as I think of Ash’s fiancee Kosha and his one-year-old son Kayden.”

Mr Jenkinson performed his first flight in May 2007 and obtained his commercial pilot’s licence in June 2008.

In December 2011, he became a Grade 1 Instructor and trained hundreds of commercial helicopter pilots before becoming Sea World Helicopters’ chief pilot.

“We have lost a first-class pilot, a first-class man and a wonderful father, partner and friend.”

Mr Orr-Campbell also acknowledged second pilot Michael James who was able to land his chopper safely after the incident, sparing the lives of all on board.

“I would also like to commend the other pilot, Michael James, who heroically got the second aircraft to the ground safely. We wish him well in his recovery.”

The only thing two helicopter pilots can agree on is what the third one is doing wrong.

Press conference here https://www.youtube.com/live/Dmt1XsPi2k4?feature=share

Doesn't ultimately cover anything that the preliminary doesn't, lots of grubby questions by leach “journalists” fishing for headlines.

Where are the black boxes
Asking atsb about Criminal charges
Trying to paint the taxi call as the smoking gun
Mentioning AJ by name and asking if he had a history of behavior
Opportunistic half question half snide remark about “getting in an aircraft without wings”

Well done to the atsb spokesman for keeping a straight face when presented with such clueless kiniving drivel.
Just waiting for dole time.

I didn’t really hear it that way.
Take your emotion out of it and they sound like pretty straight forward questions.
Not everyone has an understanding of aviation, clearly some of the journalist fall into that category. However, the public are none the wiser either. So what seem like a pointless line of questioning to you may not be to others.

Stay calm, and please hold back on your emotions BS community.
Lots of variables in this situation, like I mean LOTS..
Unfortunately, we all need to sit tight and let the agencies deliver the findings, then unfortunately the courts will pursue from there.

They may not be on point and as Pilots and friends, we all have inside intel/operational beliefs. Some true and some emotional.

Put that knowledge and she/he said aside ATM.

This is the biggest tragedy of modern day aviation in Australia ATM, that has also become world wide news..

Im certain the ATSB and CA$A have never been pushed so hard to release an initial finding before. The press release was evident of that. Stutters under the pump and poor press training/guidance to the individual facing the press. PC….

Any information on SM can be dragged into defence counts in the courts. (This one is neutral)

There will be multiple parties that will fall under the microscope here.

Sit tight and grab a seat.

All respect to those who have been lost, family and friends involved.

GF, done here.

Angus did a good job despite the media grubs.

some stupid questions by the media but expected as they have NFI anyway.

This will go on for years.

Coronial will be after the full report.

Dreamworld took almost 2yrs for the Coronial after Police/WHSQ.

Poor timing on the release of the report given it's been 1 year today.....

Having read the interim report, we can await the 'aviation experts' and 'media grubs' to focus on one element.

To be fair, the information itself is far from ideal.

The positive is all they’ll unfortunately be focusing on.
Put down the tubular bells for a while gents. CA$A perhaps will be doing more frequent randoms.
