Theory passed
Well over the last couple of years of self study, I've put a few posts up in here asking about things. Well this week it finally happened and thought I better let you all know. I finally passed all 7 cplh subjects. Thankyou to everyone who has helped with answers. And generally just chatted on here, it gave me things to read. I'm in the process of setting up my flight training now. I will be doing it the least popular way thru a VET loan. As to me it's the best time option. If I was to pay as I go I'd be around 54 by time I completed training which really doesn't leave much time to gain the magic 1000 hours and trying to get a decent living out of it. At least this way I'll be learning faster and finishing before 50 hopefully. I may never get a job or I may luck out and pick something up straight away. At least I'm trying to finally fulfill the dream. But the it was great to finally pass that dam theory for now. My last subject was ops and it almost killed me trying to pass that exam.. I was always getting over 90% in my prac exams yet only passed on my 3rd attempt for real. onwards and upwards from here

Well done !! It’s a “big rock out of the stomach”... one suggestion from an almost 50yo mate . Do not think about getting married, having kids, buying a property or some serious relationship until you find, hopefully, that FULL time pilot job you dreaming for!!
Good luck!

Or even after getting a “FULL time pilot job…”
The industry seems to be going down the drain.
In Off-Shore there is a big push towards “casualisation”, and “Contracts”. Try getting a home loan with 8 months left on your contract - “But I’m sure it’s going to be renewed”.
Drones have taken many tasks previously undertaken by Helicopters, and likely will take more as technology progresses.
Tourism has been smashed, and may never return to what it was. (A common “starting” position in Australia.)
EMS often requires not only NVIS qualifications, but also experience. Often attained in the military.
Tough times. IMHO.

Well done Gasket. Although I'm out of the industry now I had a blast for the past 32 years.
Even though things are looking grim for helicopters at the moment, you never know how things will change in the future. Better to be able to do it when things kick off than to be trying to get your licence after things improve.
I was told once that being a helicopter Pilot wasn't a job, it was a life style. Money is generally rubbish until you have experience. I was also told that getting your CPL(H) just meant you could go out and learn how to do it.
Regardless, enjoy it, you've worked hard and you will work harder as you go along. But it will be fun.

Glad I’m not The only one that sees it the same, I can barely get a job at 3000 hours let alone a fresh CPL. Congrats gasket, hope you have a better run then I did, I’m single, fat, no super, stressed out and no life

Re: Theory passed
Thanks all. I did try and start flying about 15 years ago. I was concentrating on my racing career (well trying to turn it into a career) and couldn't afford to do both. Yeah I've been watching drones. I really hate the things even without them taking helicopter jobs, I hate the fact everyone goes out and gets them and fly them around filming everything. And obviously these pilotless drone taxi services that are being worked on. Which makes no sense how they can be allowed from sounds of it they wil be flying from wherever they want to wherever they want. You get in trouble for landing a heli in suburbia sheesh. As for money and life. Yep like racing I'm presuming its a lifestyle not a money thing. Sadly I'm in even worse financial position now than I was when I was 20 having lost business and everything. But we have just bought a house. Tho at start I'll prob stick with my job doing 1 on 1 off and fly that way for a while. Yeah tourism died that sucks. Like everyone I'd love to get to EMS but under no illusion at my age that I'd get to the hours etc required for that. I'd love to get o doing line work or something tho eventually.

Well done on the theory and enjoy the flying, the hardest part is now completed (other than the first job)!!
I do believe your attitude regarding drones however is quite naive and ignorant. It shouldn't be an us vs them mentality, but unfortunately they are replacing helicopters in some areas, which is a result of technological evolvement. I do strongly believe we can operate in harmony with professional drone operators.
Keep in mind, you've kinda implied you hate mine operators, surf life saving, police, SAR, 1000's of surveyors, probably quite a few pilots too no doubt and many more that use drones.
A quick Google search also reveals drone operators are governed by CASA, and there already appears to be a few hundred pages of legislation (typical). Could you image CASA really letting drone taxi services fly unregulated, wherever they want!!??
Good luck on your journey!

And there's a typically millennial attitude. If someone disagrees with your opinion then they HATE it. Get a grip, everyone is entitled to their opinion no matter how distasteful. Life is a rich tapestry not a blind obedience.

I think you have missed my point, the point was sarcasm
The few left, 3 of them to be exact still think the earth is flat and they have never been able to find the word "progress" in the dictionary.

Hey Cupid, try not to fall to the level of idiots.
Try to keep stuff positive on here if you can, even when doesn't seem worth it.

Good stuff Gasket, hopefully any help I gave wasn't a bum steer.
I thought I was done with exams after CPL(H) but I just dragged myself naked through glass to sit IREX; If I thought PERF was bad, man that sucked!
I think there's always going to be exams
Cheers,
Chang

Re: Theory passed
Thanks for the positive comments folks. Tho some seem to have a crazy perception on what others think. I don't have an us and them attitude, tho it might be leaning slightly that way ;P I race bikes ,cars and do all sorts of similar sports. There are always people with drones around. Which a) aren't allowed for obvious reasons and b) are bloody distracting. Also when you read all the stories coming out about where drones are heading it is a bit sad. Now where did I imply I also hate mine workers, lifeguards etc. I work in the mining game at the moment. and pretty much live on the dam beach. I'm trying to reach for 1 of my 2 dream jobs. It's going to be hard and as I stated due to time left being 50 I've opted for a VET loan which has added extra pressure. However I'm commiting and giving it my all. I've met some awesome folks already and hopefully meet many more. Yeah Changy I realise the exams are going to keep coming, but man it feels awesome to have the cpl stuff done. I'll go for the rest once I'm qualified I think. I start flying on the 30th Sept pretty excited.

Good on ya Gasket. The hard work will pay off eventually.. fingers crossed you can find someone flying somewhere soon!
The only thing two helicopter pilots can agree on is what the third one is doing wrong.
