I'm looking for the best quality mountain training/course in NZ.
I've heard good things about Wanaka Helicopters in the past, but wondered if there were other respected courses our there.
Any information (good or bad) would be be much appreciated.
Thanks

I’ve done a fair amount of research on this and spoken to the man himself at Wanaka. It’s the only outfit in the Southern Hemisphere I’d consider.

I did mine with Wanaka Helicopters, learnt a heap and couldn't recommend them enough. Your only a minute from the mountains so your straight into it.

I did my squirrel rating there some years ago. Pinnacle landing at 5000' in the snow was outstanding. Very high quality of training with the team, you'd be very hard pressed to find better.

Suppose it depends on what you want to get out of the course. are you after high alpine mountain flying, or tight bush mountain flying?

What I'm after is the best training option that will give me the experience and skills to cope in all mountain environments.
A focus on challenging mountain confined areas etc. would prepare a pilot for all 'lesser' mountain flying scenarios, so, given the option, I'd choose the 'tight mountain bush' option.

It would be hard to beat Wanaka Helicopters for all of the above. A range of aircraft to train in too.

No need to overthink it. Just call Simon and tell him what you want and why. They’ll sort you out.

I would call Gav Burgess at Te Anau Heli services.

Consider having a chat with Mark Law or Shamus Howard in the Bay of Plenty.
Mark is next level in the Raukumara Range, likewise Shamus in the Kaimanawa and Kaweka Ranges.
Kaimanawa and Kaweka's will gives you a nice balance of crazy tight bush and Alpine flying.
