The Opportunity

We are currently seeking Pilots to join our team on a full-time basis at our Toowoomba base working on our SGAS contract. Primary base is our Toowoomba location with Touring to our Roma location in a regular basis as part of the roster.

We are seeking interest from both Captains and Co-Pilots.

Pay and conditions are in accordance with the LifeFlight Australia Limited and Rotary Wing Pilots Certified Agreement 2016-2019 Work Practice 2.

Live within 30 minutes travel time of ‘Home Base’ (Toowoomba LifeFlight Hangar)
Strong communication skills
A safety first attitude
Enthusiasm and a drive to achieve and maintain the highest level of competency within aero-medical operations.


Captain

Essential Criteria

ATPL (H)
CIR ME with minimum 3 renewals (IPCs)
NVFR(H)
Minimum 3000 hours rotary wing
1500 hours PIC rotary wing
500 hours PIC ME turbine rotary wing
100 hours Instrument Flight
100 hours Night
Dangerous Goods Certificate
HUET/EBS Certified
Class 1 medical


Desirable Criteria

Type Rating (AW139) with 100 hours on type
Previous EMS/SAR experience
NVIS Rating


Co-Pilot

Essential Criteria

CPL (H)
CIR-ME
NVFR(H)
1000 hours rotary wing
500 hours Multi-Engine rotary wing
100 hours PIC rotary wing
LL-WR
Dangerous Goods Certificate
HUET/EBS Certified
Class 1 medical


Desirable Criteria

Generally speaking and as suggested above, from the offshore industry.

The great thing is that both pilot and copilot AW139 hours requirement is under the Desirable heading...so, presumably if they don't get any candidates with AW139 type ratings and/or hours, they'll hire and train from scratch on the new type.

Supplying a type rating is but nothing at the end of the day, the requirement of a instrument rating and 500 hours multi for a co-pilot puts a lot of aspiring guys well out of the pumpkin patch, the days of supplying guys with CIR/ME is dead by the looks of things, very hard to break this industry without a serious cost to the pilot.

Sadly, a lot of factors have made it much, much harder for aspiring entrants to gain the qualifications to enter the realms of offshore or EMS. The instrument rating is the main stumbling block for most (who can realistically afford circa $75,000 after a CPL-H has been paid funded?).

Add to this the ATPL which is basically impossible to get now unless one is already in an offshore or EMS operation with access to a suitable simulator.

However, the pool of fully qualified people has shrunken significantly and operators will soon likely have to invest in new pilots and cover at least some of the cost of training. It will be that, or park up aircraft! The other issue may well become the time it takes to fill a seat if someone requires an instrument and type rating

It is good to see jobs like this being advertised, no doubt there are a few who meet the requirements. It is a shame there are no current pathways into these types of jobs though.

If demand eventually exceeds supply then something will need to change, as it was a decade ago when training was thrown around to just about anyone. Nobody I know has any intention of self funding another $80,000 or more for training, to then be at the peril of a volatile oil and gas market all whilst earning less than the passengers being carried. With the current opportunities in FW world I can't see too many self funding to do an identical job in a helicopter.
