NVG trial for firefighting

Postby Twistgrip » Thu Mar 1 2018, 03:41

Just on ABC news. Good to see Casa assessing the technology at last.

It is good to see but NVIS on firefighting has been used for some time in the states and also in NZ.

...hence Twistgrips reference to "at last". Australia's nanny state government is always a decade or 2 behind the innovation curve, we have some great innovators but too many brick walls are thrown up in front of them.

Emergency Management Vic are saying that Australia is the first to trial hover refill over water at night, what have they been doing in the US/NZ? Surely not landing to refill.

In the US one company ground fills the tank. Though I know Kern county in CA hover fills with snorkel on nvg’s.

It's more cutting edge than you think.
The West Coast operators all ground fill, with the exception of one recent operator.
This Australian operation involves filling from surveyed dip sites, using a FLIR and laser equipped 76 as overwatch.

The NZ operators use buckets and dip as you would during the day pre and post NVIS.

I haven't used NVG's since I was running around in the mangroves with an SLR, but depth perception was a bit of an issue. I hope the new ones are better if they're doing VR work!

Depth perception is still an issue with NVG.
The shorter the line the better within reason but a 200ft line doesn’t work!!!!

This is all tank work, no buckets.

Belly tank would be the way to go. I'm not sure how comfortable I'd be with a 100ft line underneath whilst on goggles.

Is the trial single pilot or multi pilot NVIS flying?

So, does this mean that all pilots must have an ATPL (multi crew ops)?

This is pretty cool.

Is it Just Coulson and Kestrel?

At this stage just Coulson and Kestrel. Both have conducted proving flights out of Ballarat.
There is a TMI, Temporary Management Instruction on the CASA website, although the proving flights included an exemption to allow hover fill from natural water source. The TMI originally limited to sitting on the ground fill or a dip tank.
The project also used Coulson’s S76 as an AAS platform with its camera system and linked laser.
What you leave behind is not what is engraved in stone monuments, but what is woven into the lives of others.
