Re: EMS Pilots required NZ
Sounds to me some of the commentators have a log (not a chip) on their shoulders. I used to work for this organization and was paid above what other pilots in NZ, doing the same type of work, plus well looked after by the organization. A/C were well equipped and maintained second to none. 19 pilots in 17 years, well it has been going 25 plus years and had 7 operations at 6 bases. Yes one base did have a number of pilots manly in recent years, in my view due to young pilots gaining hours and moving on in a tight pilot market. It was a difficult base for many reasons to work from. Organization has an excellent safety record in the EMS world, something that few EMS organisations can claim. The company always meet and in many cases exceeded its commitment with pay rates to pilots for those who went the extra distance. More than what could be said for some pilots I saw, in my time there.

EMS Pilots required NZ
PILOTS - Take your flying career to new heights!
Based in New Zealand, the Philips Search & Rescue Trust has flown more than 20,000 patients since its inception in 1985, responding to emergency ambulance and inter-hospital patient transport requests from its five rescue helicopter/air ambulance bases in Hamilton, Tauranga, Rotorua, Taupo and Palmerston North and a fixed-wing base in Hamilton.
Operating five VFR AS350s, an IFR Bell222B, a Mitsubishi MU2 and a Piper Chieftain, our aircraft are outfitted with the very latest in navigation, safety technology and role equipment.
We want to employ two helicopter pilots and a fixed-wing pilot to join our highly experienced team. EMS operators are often tasked to respond in challenging environments and the successful applicant will have the necessary skills to join an elite group of individuals with first class flying abilities and a proven track record of safety first. This position offers job security, lifestyle and a competitive salary whilst carrying out a task that makes a real difference to many peoples lives.

Quote from their website,
"The Bell 222 helicopter is the only certified single-pilot IFR helicopter in Australasia."

Iroam,
For your first post to be a (not so) lightly veiled criticism of this organisation is gutsy. I'm going to give you just the smallest bit of latitude here, but we here at Bladeslapper (moderators and posters alike) are moving toward a more constructive format. If you feel that criticism is the best you can do, your tenure here will be short. Warning one.

Master Cylinder,
I don't think that there was that much wrong with that post. He/she was not even near the level of bagging seen in a recent post and was merely giving some food for thought backed up by some figures (which I hope are facts). Going around and giving warnings to those who are contributers may stop the flow of useful information on this site, leaving newbies or those who are none the wiser in the dark. I do agree however that topics should not be allowed to sink as low as the recent one did.

MC, I see where you're coming from, especially the “first post is a doosy” aspect.
However the numbers sound about right, and that is a legitimate concern for potential applicants.
Anyway – he got a warning, not any editing and most of us would like to see Blade Slapper maintain its usual high standards.

Sounds like censorship to me! I would say there is a big concern when a company "any company" has gone through 17 pilots that fast, it points in a clear direction of poor management! I think the poster has done us an invaluable service of pointing out this fact! Thank you!
The guy did not slag the operator, he just merely pointed out a fact. It is up to the owners and management of any company to aspire to great feats of management, just as they the operators expect the pilots to aspire to great levels of professionalism and safety.
Thanks for the useful information!

The pilot turnover is a valid point, however the operation had a change of managment last month, the former managment are no longer involved, period

Agreed, you have to let people have their opinion, just because some don't like it should be irrelivant. Isn't that what slapper is all about, giving us a chance to have a say without a major impact on us. If you really what to choke down everybodies ideas/opinions, get rid of the catchy names and publish peoples real names, that will cut the outright slagging that happens every now and then. As it stands now, the moderators are censoring the site to their own opinion/standard. What looks like slagging to one maybe valuable info to another.
iroam's comment is a good one, 19 pilots in 17 years does raise the eye brows, unless of course, they still have 19 pilots.............
The other comment from their website about having the only SPIFR helicopter in Australiasia, might be a typo, but surely they have quality control, must have meant the only one in their street..............

This is part of the add they posted. I have a problem with the words in bold.
1. What are the necessary skills to join an elite group- Sounds like somebody is full of themselves. Ok I will apply with 5000hrs( 90% turbine)+ ATPL, and check pilot authorization.
2. First Class flying abilities- According to who?
3. Job security- Obviously not for the last 17 pilots out of 19 or whatever the case may be
4. Competitive salary- According to who. I currently earn 130,000USD per year- match it.
What this sounds like to me is a opportunity with a major head trip attached. I could be wrong but I doubt it. Just my opinion! Take it or leave it!

MC, I think you need to take the criticism on the chin for this one - but at least you offered some wiggle room, iroam's warning is very valid to one who is seriously interested in the position. Such intel prompts one to then do some in-depth research. As long as he/she does not continue with slander, these type of warnings are valuable to us all.
To bring this home and make it more personal to you - I offer the same inference to your future destination, make sure you do your homework!
Cheers to all for a happy healthy forum.

Hemi, I don't believe you are entirely correct!!!! The previous AOC holder is certainly no longer involved but the current management retains a number of the original principals, including bean counters & senior pilot staff, or certainly did a couple of weeks ago.
WRT the pilot turnover, it must be remembered that a number of those pilots remained employed for atleast 5 years & some even longer. Those pilots are over the complete group of bases & one must remember that some were just not cutout for the role, others have gone on to their own management positions & others have upgraded overseas or elsewhere. One now management pilot must be the longest serving pilot in one base in the NZ EMS industry, regardless of any other criticism he may attract.
The comment regarding the B222 (SP IFR in Australasia) must also be taken in context. The website was first created many years ago & the text has just been carried over in its few updates without a good look at its content. This has been quite common in this organisation, you should've seen the spelling mistakes etc in the early days! & the current #2 pilot has been in Hamilton for a number of years & his photo is only a recent addition to the website, maybe that was his own choice?
Certainly prospectives must carry out their own due diligence & Skypigs comments are a good source of caution, as unbalanced as they may otherwise be.

I have it on good authority, that it was indeed "his choice"; furthermore, he did not even know that his bio had been posted until someone sent him a link to this job listing and he saw your post. The word was that he was not at all happy about it; he's apparently a very private guy.

Re: EMS Pilots required NZ
Some History
The Philips Search & Rescue Trust have just recently taken over full operations, previously an operator leased its helo's and pilots to the Trust.
There has indeed been a large pilot turn over in past number of years, mainly due to salaries, pay was production based , while the old operator was at the helm- (very hard to quantify in the EMS world), I would hope this salary system would change under the new management.
There are some very old schools of thought re: long-lining patients is a better option than winching
Check the length of times left on ACC, St John and Hospital contracts, as at one of the Bases there is a local operator itching to get his hands on the contracts offering an IFR BK117 over the current AS350.
I enjoyed my time there, but left due the the salary system (very hard to pay the bills when you don't know what your going to get paid from week to week)
Good bunch of people to work with at the coal face. Good way to get a start in EMS if you've never done it before and are keen on that line of work
