You are right that it concerns me that charter operator's demand pilot's not wear helmet's.

Tell me Jane. What estimate have you come up with for you to provide a suitable range of helmet's including skullcaps for client's in your charter business?

Has anyone ever asked for one?

Interesting reading

Statistically flying fatalities are ten times more likely in civil helicopters than aeroplanes – but Dr Blundell says crashes are survivable. “Because helicopters fly close to the ground the impact which they hit the ground in a typical crash scenario is actually less than in a motorway car smash".

I'm glad someone is looking into this.

BJ: no point training your guns on me, soldier - I am not a charter operator.
The helmet thing should be clearcut...if the pilot needs one, so does the passenger. Period.

If tourist/charter flights are low risk-which appears to be the conventional view and I agree- and pax don't need them neither does the pilot.
If the industry decides en masse to change that view, I'll buy myself a helmet or stop flying.

But in the meantime I will genuinely be curious to hear how you go after you've spent your $50,000-odd on your CPL(h) and you turn up at the Rock or Phillip Is or somewhere else looking for work to build your hours, and you tell the CP's that you don't fly without your helmet ever.
Go get 'em!

Okay then seeing as I'm being called a dick.

Can all the tour operator's who would not hire a pilot purely based on the fact he wears a helmet please stand up and name yourself.

BJ,

Just let it go while your'e not to far behind the game.
Horses for courses, everyone has their own ideas.
Eventually you'll (maybe) be glad to do some hours where you don't have to wear a helmet.

If you want a start, what the operator says goes, otherwise you'll look stupid driving your car/riding your bike with a pilot helmet on your noggin!!!!!

Just my simple (uninformed) observation,

HM :)

BJ if you really want to wear a helmet join the Army.

If you want to wear one on Scenic flights go for it, just get your license first then get a job and then tell the boss you're wearing a helmet. Two things can happen, Boss will say Yeah Cool Ben, OR Boss will give you it's my way or the Highway talk. Then you can decide if you want to stay or go.
Cheers
Ray

Ps I have worn a helmet on scenic flights, my headset was broken. I had to explain that to just about every pax that got in.

I have a better idea.... Speak up all the opperators who would not hire BJ because is an arrogant s^it who just wont listen or take in advice.

BJ, you havent even started your training yet, you come on here and ask for advice, you get advice and instead of making an informed decision yourself, you carry on and piss off a lot of people in the industry who potentially you could be trying to get a job from in the future.

F*ck man, if you want to wear a helmet then wear one, if you don't the don't. But just shut the hell up, learn to be an observer until you have the maturity to make a possitive contribution to this site. If this is such a big hurdle for you, I don't know how you will get through theory without debating everything you learn...

Mods.. please lock this thread and let it rest, i think all the pro's and cons in different situations has been discussed and it up to each and everyone to make up their own mind.

Everyone, ease up!
I'm reluctant to lock this thread because its 4 pages long which says there's a fair bit of interest in the topic but please have a bit of respect for each others' opinions.
And porno do you want to edit some of the language out of your post, please? I don't want to do it for you!
Let's try to keep it nice here... :|

Swear all you want at me guys, I've worked in various kitten's for 12 years and dealt with threats under extreme pressure from lunatic Chef's

Just like it is your choice to not employ me if I choose to wear a helmet, it is my choice to apply to work for your competitor. Why would I want to fly for someone that I felt compromised my safety? I don't even remember saying I would never fly without a helmet anyway! Check my thread "headphones or helmet"

Besides Heli and Jabberwocky, no one has actually discussed improving safety. I'm not personally attacking you people! Calm down, and check out the links I posted.

So as it is, no one is interested if a neck brace was created for choppers for even the most dangerous flights? Given that you need to be tightly strapped in to your harness for this to work, would it be a problem reaching all the bells and whistles?

Dangerous Jobs

Postby Izzy Fullashat » Mon Feb 25 2008, 21:25

BJ

If you want to wear a helmet whilst "Training" in my opinion you will look like a "TOSSER". But if you tkink that it helps with safety wear it. Maybe you should just find something a little less dangerous to have a go at, like come up with a new soft blade of grass so when you do make it back from your 10 minute scenic in "HELMET, GLOVES, FLIGHT SUIT, STEEL CAP BOOTS,SAFETY GLASSES if they fit under VISOR,PARACHUTE, & LIFE VEST for over creek flights" you wont crack your lips when you kiss the ground. BJ if you look nervous your instructor and passengers will pick it up so just relax and enjoy the best job you can do on planet earth. Just my low time opinion.

Izzy (Probably Still Am)

PS Before you have a dig at me just sit back and read all the posts there just everyones own opinion which you have asked for!!!!

Looks like you're making a great impression on the industry already BJ.

Personally, I think someone should make a helicopter out of cotton wool. They might even put in some "Dettol" airbags if you ask them. That way if you crash, you wont need to get your mum to put Dettol on your wounds for you.

To be able to learn you must first be able to listen.

No-one here owes you anything. Remember that.

Sorry Jane, this one has gone far enough. I don't think anything else constructive will come of it.
