AHIA - Heli-Expo update

Postby AUSTHIA » Thu Mar 9 2017, 00:10

AHIA President Peter Crook, HAI President Matt Zucarro and AHIA Vice President Ray Cronin at the completion of the International Federation of Helicopter Associations (IFHA) luncheon at Heli-Expo Tuesday 7 March. At the meeting we were given the opportunity to give a brief review of AHIA activities and significant forward programmes.

On Thursday 9 March there will be a three hour IFHA forum where member Associations (AHIA is a member of IFHA )will be given time to give an overview of issues effecting the helicopter industry in their part of the world and actions taken to resolve these issues.

AHIA President Peter Crook and Grant Kenny in front of the first production Bell 505 JetRangerX. Crook and Kenny were members of the Bell Customer Advisory Council (CAC) which designed the 505. The Council was made up of fifteen aviation specialists from around the world. This was a unique programme which started with a blank sheet in November 2011 to the delivery of the first machine to Scott Urschel of Pylon Aviation today Tuesday 7 March.

To celebrate the impending first delivery Bell invited the members of the CAC to their Flight Training Academy at Hurst, Fort Worth, last Sunday 5 March. We were given a tour of the refurbished Training facility and given a presentation on the milestones of the CAC design progress from 2011 to today. We were then given the opportunity to fly the 505 which made Crook and Kenny the first Australians to get time on this helicopter. The day was a fitting end to what was an incredible programme.

Just out of curiosity and knowing that this question may well sound fecetious. Did anyone on the Advisory Council at any time mention to Bell that the 505 is more than a little bit ugly? When you look at what the likes of Leonardo, Airbus Helicopter turn out and even the venerable old Jet Ranger itself. Bell's design department dropped the ball on this one.

Maaaaate,

As Lyle Lovett proved many years ago, you don't have to be the most attractive bloke in the room to be successful.
