missing helicopter, northern NSW

Postby porjo » Mon Nov 9 2015, 05:20

News reports of search and rescue operation under-way to find a missing helicopter with 3 on board (pilot + 2 PAX) which "disappeared somewhere between Tamworth and the Northern Beaches". The flight departed on Saturday bound for Northern Sydney but the search did not commence until today due to "no 'SAR time alert'"

SMH have reported the aircraft is a privately-owned EC135.

AMSA Dornier is in the air - Flightaware track certainly shows them circling a tight area in the Watagans NP west of Lake Macquarie.

I hope the news from the ground is positive.

Having worked in there a fair bit, it can be a nasty area that can catch you out. Hopefully Richard and Carol have found somewhere to put it down.

I've been following this all day. Here is the track of the AMSA Dornier search aircraft. The larger circling track on the left is the Dornier's first track, then a Squirrel appeared briefly on Flight Tracker and was essentially stationary, shortly thereafter the AMSA aircraft began circling the Squirrel's location which is the smaller circle on the right. Various news outlets reporting wreckage has been found. :(

Dear fellow pilots,

As a friend of Richard and Carolyn, I'm deeply saddened by todays news. I will miss them both ... very much.

Please fly safe and read the weather reports every flight.

Our thoughts go out to their friends and families.
A sad day.

Had the privilege to fly with Richard a few times in the Gazelle days and then when he got the new EC135. Loved to talk photography with him and he will be sorely missed.

Rest in Peace :(

I only know the Greens through their fabulous book 'Remote & Wild', autographed by both as a fund-raising item for The Greens.
Very sad to learn of their demise - a great loss to the helicopter, photography and environmental worlds.

Very sad to hear the news of Richard and Carolyn, and also of their passenger. I never met Richard but felt I new him through his blog, the last of which arrived in my inbox last Friday. In it he described his most recent travels to places in and around our beautiful country that I will never manage to visit.
Thoughts with Richard and Carolyn's family and friends.

Never a good thing for anyone within our fraternity to lose their life. A sad day for the broader industry and family/friends of the deceased.

It's official, 9 news has declared the accident that took three lives near Cessnock as "pilot error". Well done, ATSB can relax and drop the investigation. These people obviously have a wealth of aviation knowledge to be able to come to a conclusion without even getting on the ground at the accident site. What absolute morons. REPORT THE NEWS, DON'T MAKE IT UP.

I also see that the media is happy to bring up the pilots past. Nice slagging guys, you obviously don't make mistakes.
And some of us thought some slappers were quick off the mark to second guess other pilots. We are actually a very poor second....................
