I think going forward is still the best option, unless there is some reason very good reason you can't, like an obstacle ahead.
Forward airspeed will make the tail rotor more effective as the main rotor downwash and relative airflow flows back over it,
and you get some lift from the fuselage shape and the horizontal stabilizer.
