I have tidied up the thread somewhat. There is a limit to the number of URL's that can be on one post, so the list has been split into three sections so that Skeeter can keep posting.

Good job on getting this thread going.

Hi, I'm going to be getting an iPad soon, mainly for aviation purposes. I'm just wondering whether to get the normal or the mini iPad. The way I understand it, you cannot use the iPad mini in replacement of legal on-board documents and paraphernalia, only the full sized iPad, but on the other hand I'm flying aircraft with space-restrictive cockpit that the mini would be more comfortable. Can anyone advise on the preferable option? Thanks.

helinoob, it is only a recommendation under ICAO, not a legal requirement for the larger size.

What is the minimum size for an EFB?

EFBs need to be able to display information in a manner comparable to the paper aeronautical charts and data they replace. They should have a screen approximately A5 therefore, have a screen size of at least A5 i.e. 210 x 148 mm; 8.3 x 5.8 in. A PDA can only be used for calculations.

A smartphone is not appropriate or acceptable as either a primary or backup device.

The recommended minimum size of the screen is A5 (as per ICAO Annex 4). If the intent of the installation is to display charts and maps, the device should be suitably sized to display the image without excessive scrolling.

Added!

If someone wants to add any info / comment to the apps he is more than welcome to post it here.
I will add it to the original post or copy the link to the discussion thread.

There is also a new EFB section here in the forum.
Maybe we can get some simple "how-to" together for the ..."whats an app generation???"

Some more info re the use of EFB's that contain GPS for navigation.
This come from http://www.casa.gov.au/wcmswr/_assets/m ... h/35_1.pdf
Please note that these changes apply to IFR flight, and may not have been read by most since we don't apply IFR, but I thought it useful to extract a couple of VFR related points.

Hand Held Equipment. Equipment that is portable and operates off an internal battery and an integrated (internal or external) antenna. There may be provision for a remote antenna that is temporarily attached to the aircraft using suction cups, clamps etc. No modification is made to the aircraft structure or electrical wiring. Since hand held GPS receivers, at this time, do not provide a RAIM type function for integrity checking they are not an approved aid to navigation and their use is limited to VFR supplemental en-route. If a hand held unit is to be used for VFR Supplemental navigation, CASA strongly recommends that a type identified by the manufacturer as being suitable for aviation purposes is used.

One of the problems with the iSuite is that Apple will not/never reveal how their technology works. They don't want it copied and that makes sense, but it also means that the various agencies around the world cannot approve the iPads, etc as primary source of navigation. Most of use would agree though that they are perfect to be used for VFR Supplemental navigation.

Sorry for the late response.
I would give https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... ios.navbag a try.
It's free at the moment (still under development) but seems to be (already) quite good.
Being an Australian development it should cover all you need!

Having changed my phone just a few days ago to Android I am still testing them.

Already the first edit: Navbag (because of being still under development) requires internet to display a map. :( Will change in the future but not really useful at the moment.
