casa psychiatrist

Postby jpop10 » Sun Mar 26 2017, 07:50

G'day fellow pilots,

Going through abit of a rough patch with casa at the moment. Back in February I made a silly decision at home in a small country town and got done for DUI. I was honest during my medical and told my DAME that I had been done.

Casa then requested further information, a national police check and blood tests regarding my liver functions. I completed all these tasks and had them sent to casa ASAP.

Casa has now cancelled my medical and told me that I have to book an appointment with a alcohol addiction doctor ( psychiatrist ). Has anyone else had this issue?? I don't have a criminal record or any other police/ alcohol issues and defiantly not a alcoholic.

Love to hear from you.

Safe flying and cheers :D

Yea I know mate but what can you do. Just hitting it head on, what else can you do. Only 22yrs old... see what happens. Pretty daunting but have to wait to see the outcome and go from there.

I went through a similar thing where I had a lot going on personally, I told my GP who knew I fly maybe 30hrs a year and he told casa who then wanted reports from a "specialist". I had about 10 visits to a psychologist who helped heaps but that wasn't enough for casa so I had the see a psychiatrist at $600/hr, they read the psychologist and GP reports and casa letter and couldn't understand why I had to see them. They were very good with the wording of their letter and I got my medical passed but then had to see one every year until told otherwise. I called the casa dame and asked why I had to see a psychiatrist once a year to get my medical when I could see a psychologist several times who could provide a better understanding and sanity prevailed.
The lesson I learnt was don't tell them anymore then you have to!
I understand about safety and risk management but I have been proactive about managing my health and safety (and hence my families future) since I decided I was an adult(about 29yo) but casa doesn't know how to treat people as people! Just fee paying liabilities.

Similar thing happened to a dude I worked with in nz. He hadn't been caught dui but came clean on how much he drank when he went for his renewal. That was double what he had been telling so CAA saw his consumption jump by 100%! Long story short he spent nine months trying to get his medical back with lots of tests (which he kept failing as he didn't get off the pi55 a week before the test). Lots of wasted time any money he got it back in the end but gave up flying a year or two later.

I'm getting a bit concerned about how much private information avmed are wanting from us. And even more worried about how they are using this information to stop us from flying.

Where will it end. I know they'll drag out the old chestnut "safety" to justify their invasion of our privacy, but where does my privacy begin.

I also get very annoyed when avmed want all sorts of tests done and then when the results are presented, take no notice of the results or what experts in the field say.

HIP

100% agree.

It's BS level 12, out of 10.

Without being unkind to our (older) mates, most of them would not be flying if they told the DAME 100% the facts.

As if 3 beers is different to 2 ? It's not like the guys are flying after drinking !

Lunacy. But that's GA in Aus now.

......& then there's "Germanwings flight 9525", where the co- pilot had been declared unfit but turned up for duty without telling anyone & drove an airliner into a mountain. As pilots we like to think that CASA & their cronies are there to help us, but they're actually there to protect the paying passenger. They don't care about the pilots dreams, aspirations or how much we spent to get flying - they care about how it will look for them if we're on the 6pm news after an incident which they could have prevented had they grounded us. They don't look for reasons to help us fly, they assume we're grounded unless we can prove that we're fit to fly.

Heliduck, I have grave doubts that caa has any interest in the "paying passenger". It's all about job protection (theirs only). The word "safety" is flung around willy nilly by them because they think is justifies their existence.

That's why I'll never use that word in their title.

You could be right HIP, but how do we get the "authority" out of their title?
