Their "expression of interest" has been running since august last year, might have something to do with finding people living permanently up there I'd say....

Horny Island is an interesting place to fly, if you like being hot. Living there full time presents cost challenges, which the FIFO pilots don't face - FIFO can bring an esky full of frozen meals from home, to last for 2 weeks, but full-timers are faced with buying local which is pretty expensive. But a single bloke can survive on packet noodles and beer.

Yeah I've done the fifo experience up there, good challenging flying, and it's always great to board your freedom bird home after a couple weeks, but to live up there permenantly on those wages, high grocery costs and full-time communal living can be a drag even for a single bloke. Looks like they've knocked 500 hrs off the minimums since the last time they advertised, re-instate fifo and I might be interested.....

Stick it out for a few years up there and you can move into the lucrative scenic flight market

They are looking for someone with 500 hours. It's highly unlikely to be a touring position with a 6 figure salary at that level.
I guess it's one of those jobs where you go to get some experience then move to one of the other bases. Doing your apprenticeship so to speak. High turn over probably but I bet no shortage of applicants.

Regardless of touring or live on, they don’t pay very well. Then they say ec130, h125, b407 highly desirable are they just listing desirable aircraft for pilots as like we didn’t know andthen no mention what you will be flying which is a b206l and a r44 by the way. Lift your game nautilus if you want pilots make it desirable for us too. Simple.

Agreed! paying crap PLUS the high cost of living up there AND having to live fulltime in a share house will only appeal to those willing to do their "apprenticeship". Years ago when I fifo'd out of there the company paid my airfare from Sydney to Cairns for the company checkride then paid to fifo me every 3 weeks, now they want YOU to pay your own way up for the company checkride and if successful you get housed up there permanently with NO guarantee of on-going employment to fly their more "exotic" machines once your stint up there is done. I wonder how long before we see Indian/African/ SE Asian pilot's being brought in on visas to fill these kinda positions....

Look i dont work for them, never have.. and have zero interest in their operation
But its a job.. you either will do what it takes to get the position and you career moves forward in one way or another or if not then find a more desirable position that suits your low experience levels and expectations
Everyone that is enjoying a succesful career has been there and done the hard / low pay / living away jobs..
Its almost become a right of passage... its just the way it is...

Agree with bladepitch.
It’s an entry level job. They’ve advertised the terms of the job, take it or leave it.
If there’s not enough takers or attrition outpaces reasonable training costs to get checked to line, then the terms will change.
There are a lot worse entry level jobs than this one.

Working on Horn Island isn’t so bad. Many moons ago I did a stint for 3 years as a touring aircrewman there and loved it. Shortly after I returned as a low time pilot and with a few exceptions I had a great time despite being full time in shared accommodation. You just have to make the most of it.
From my time there:
Pros....
- Beautiful tropical island scenery to fly over every day,
- Challenging weather and flight planning,
- Great variety of interesting work,
- Very good fishing and great seafood (often favours are paid in cray tails and other fresh fish)
- Great social life if you make a go of it and get out and explore (BBQs on beaches, house parties etc)
- Cheap mud crabs from Saibai Island,
- Good networking opportunity too.
Cons....
- It’s remote and food is expensive (we used to order from supermarket in Cairns and have it delivered to Seaswift to be shipped up),
- Shared accommodation can be a challenge at times,
- The weather is hot and humid during the wet season,
- The locals can be socially ‘fickle’.
It’s not forever but a great learning environment. Some of my most enjoyable flying ever was in the Torres Straits.

Well said FF. I did my time there as well and had a similar experience. I look back on most of those memories fondly

Re: Helicopter Pilots Nautilus Aviation - Horn Island, QLD
Dunno about shared accommodation, I spent my shifts in the Wongai, in a teensy little room next to the bar, no comfortable chair to sit on, 2 rotten TV channels to watch, the sewer backed up every high tide and someone else's poo was in my toilet, the ants carried away anything that looked like food, and the noise from the bar made the air conditioner sound like music. No kitten to cook food, just a microwave to heat up the frozos from home.
Bah. Humbug. (I actually wrote Kilo India Tango Charlie Hotel Echo November, but the forum changed it to a little cat.)

The Wongai changed over the years after some Melbournians bought it and spent some money on the place. It’s a nice spot in comparison to then when it was a hole.
And not sure what that happens when you type
K-itche-n and then it alters it to little cat....

This is a perfect gig for any pilot to build hours. What the ad doesn't say is the accommodation has a pool and a free boat to use. All I can say if you have something to offer put in a cv and neg the pay. Back when I had sub 1000 hrs and the opportunity to get turbine time and 500 plus hours a yr was hard to find. Maybe the industry is slowly changing.
