My fav subject is met, but i am still amused at how the "secret squirrel" coding system of trying to understand it.
I think that your friend and mind (Mr casa) should simplify the proccess. PPL holders are the main risk here for obvious reasons.
Anyone got any suggestions of a new system?????

How about a system that tests you on your understanding of the actual subject matter instead of testing your ability to understand tricky double negative hypothetical questions based on multiple references with very little relevance to the real world?
Sounds too good to be true!!
In my aerodynamics exam today i had multiple questions in sequence (up to 3!) with the exact same question word for word, just re-worded answers in the same order. I'm not complaining, but some of the other questions were so damned ambiguous! Its almost like they were written by a lawyer...

I have been told that the reason for all the codes in MET is that it is an ICAO standard and the fact that making it simple would prevent pilots stuffing up the de-code and flying into crap weather doesn't matter.
I know, before anyone gets started, that a good pilot will land when they realise that the Wx has turned, etc, and no-one on BS ever goes skud running. BUT the system could be made into plain English instead of Met-lish!!
All it takes is for the ICAO signatories to make a mature decision.

heliflyer1 - just curious as to where you sat your exam? Was it by any chance out at bankstown? I was there again today (meteorology this time, i'm trying to get them down as fast as possible )
edit: oh and to add, it was about vortex ring, and there was another series but i can't remember what they were on...

I agree with the pig. Think of "Met-lish" kinda like shorthand. You just need to learn the language. With a little practice it becomes very easy to see at a glance what weather you are dealing with. If it was in plain english you'd be reading a novel every preflight...
Use your new found knowledge to impress your non-pilot friends.
"Wow, he's so smart, just look at how he can read that complicated weather lingo."
"Of course he's smart, he's a PILOT!"

2nd nature eventually
Thanks for the support guys, I am getting my head around Met-lish, but it is a brave man who can say that they don't have to think about it.
My post was not to say that I have problems, but that I understand why some do and I believe that it could be simplified.
I'm in the difficult posistion of having a job outside of aviation and fly as a casual pilot (not prepared to sacrifice family for flying), so I'm not hands on each day with met. But I do know that Practice makes perfect.
