Re: Wow. Close call
Extremely lucky no one was injured. As some pax would have had seatbelts off.
A lot of comments are saying controls weren’t guarded during pax disembarking. Wouldn’t Ground idle have helped prevent this ? Is it just basic pilot error? Complacency may have been alive and well.

I also thought, is this helicopter not at ground idle?
Scary and lucky at the same time

I’ve never seen “ground idle” as a throttle setting on any aircraft, in the case of these things, they are off, idle or flight.
Perhaps more relevant, on this type is;
Since it has a positive collective lock, why wasn’t that applied?
Who really knows what was going on inside, but there are lessons here for us all, experienced or otherwise.

The problem with the terms idle and flight is that people get all mixed up.
There used to be idle, flight and off, as three basic throttle settings. Then people started to refer to flight idle, so is that flight with collective down, or idle on the throttle.
So that we didn’t have any confusion lots of people now refer to idle as ground idle. Originally we had idle in our SOP, but someone in CAA knew better so made us change the SOP to refer to flight idle. A few years later CAA come through and are confused because we have flight idle, so we have now changed to “ground idle” so that hopefully there can be no confusion....
It certainly makes left hand drive helicopters look far safer for most flight ops. You see what can ensue when pax turn off the fuel, yank on or push down collective, if you can get all those controls away from the pax it has to increase safety.

Its a very common party trick for the EC120. One in NZ did the same without the pilot and flew away by itself. It has to do with the dodgy collective lock. There has been an AD for their replacement so maybe this one was missed.
