Approval to carry out 50 hourly on Robinson R44
Have any pilots been successful in gaining approval to carry out Robinson 50 hourly inspection and oil change on their own machines?

Yes, depends a lot on proving to CASA that you don't have access to an engineer & you have been properly trained. For example there would be very little chance of getting the approval in the Sydney basin or Broome, but if you were half way between the 2 you might have a chance.

This only counts for aoc holders and line pilots. Private ops is a negative.

Yes, for my own R22.
The steps are:
First you need to be trained by your LAME.
Get a letter stating that training.
Contact CASA with request.
Pass interview with CASA.
Receive letter of approval to carry out 50 hourly inspections and 50 hourly maintenance as per the Lycoming maintenance manual, various SB's etc. etc.
Repeat every 2 years.
Without the letter of approval, the maintenance release cannot legally be endorsed, therefore the machine cannot legally be flown.
This really is for private operators. AOC holders will have a procedure in place to cover this.
Your LAME should give you the same advice and train you.

Thanks for the information
Is the interview about proving a need to have the approval?
My understanding is you can do the training and buy the tools then still get knocked back if CASA decide you don't need it

Can anyone shed any current light on this subject ?
And how to go about getting an instrument from CASA.
I can’t find much info anywhere which not surprising considering they don’t want anyone but LAME’s doing the 50 hourly.
Thanks.

You just get training from your maintenance organisation and certification. Send that to CASA asking for a50hrly Pilots maintainence approval
