Why would you land like that with the bucket out the back under the tail, crazy kookaburra.

Seen almost all the mediums do it that way in AUS as well. Maybe its a downwash thing?

Looks like the bucket lines are twisted. Never seen a tether used before to hold the bucket control head.

I don't know who you have seen land like that in Aus but that's surely nothing more than bad training

I'm just glad to see that I'm not the only one who doesn't seem to think it's a requirement to use a 100 foot line every time you use a bucket.
Hand in Pants, I'm thinking, my god, that IS huge!!!!!!!!

Re: Agusta AB-412HP Grifone working
Given the length of the line it's impossible for the bucket to fly up into the tail or rotor, had he have placed the bucket underneath the belly it might have got caught up with the hook and tangle the lines. He could have placed the bucket in front and in clear view though.....
In the end it's works for him and he is the PIC....
Nice short line and does the trick...

Pretty much all the medium drivers Ive seen here in canada land with line behind them.....not drag it like the 412 pilot in the video.

The idea is to be able to always see your load.
If the guy is in a medium with a open or bubble window then looking back is pretty easy.
Good luck going round to every second helicopter telling them they are poorly trained.

There is not enough data storage to document my poor technique!

Looks like std practice to me for a medium, short line requires it.
Also if you take the time to look at the aircraft you will see it has antenna at the front, fwd of the skid tubes and rear of the chin bubbles.
Some have a lot more, so to rear it goes regardless.
Dragged the bucket half a meter? ... oh dear!!
Nice job.

not standard practise to do that in a medium, short line doesn't require it, you can very easily land the bucket then move to the side and land beside it. from the angle of the vid, its hard to see if he is actually landing right on top of it, or just off to the side, either way i would have tried to put it further beside the machine. also hard to see if its LHS or RHS PIC. some of the vid looks single pilot RHS, other parts there are 2 up front.
If you have ever seen the results of someone walking head down following a hose or rope that is sitting under a spinning tail rotor, then you will decide its not a good practise to land with your tail over anything.
If you make it a habit to land with your line out under the tail, then make sure that you stick to steel line, and you don't come to NZ and do utility ops with a loading site out on some sheep farm, that has far too many thistles. the minute you use a light synthetic line and see it hanging a few feet off the ground in the thistles then you might decide not to land your tail over it.
regarding landing with a load, maybe I'm the laziest pilot on here, so anytime i land, i put the load down right beside where i want to land, and then work my way down and land beside it, doesn't matter if i have 6' of line or 200', once the load is on the ground i can sort the line out and then land where i want to be, hop out and my bucket is sitting only a couple of steps away. if something needs to be fixed I've got a tool box right in the helicopter, and i don't have to lug that across the field...

Standard practise to use a short line for a medium.... don't think so, but each to their own. Id rather a longline anyday.
Dragging the bucket half a metre or half a foot i don't are for that either not if i paid for the bucket.
