Current requirements for CHC/Bristow/Bond co pilots

Postby tailrotor » Sun Jun 7 2015, 22:51

Hello,

just trying to chase some current info about the minimum realistic requirements for offshore copilots for the major companies. There are several conflicting and slightly dated posts on this site and others about the minimum requirements so I though it might be good to get some up to date info (possibly from someone in the know) especially with the new legislation changing things up.

Kind regards in advance

Bristow are 800 pic + irex

CHC - 1000 PIC IREX and from memory 500 offshore

At this stage it will be 12 to 24 months before they hire again as CHC are letting guys go and Bristows hires from last years round weren't hired.

The oil price is on its way up though, it all hinges on that and the oil companies starting exploration up again.

It's a good time to get those PIC hours up, the closer to 3000 the better!

So nobody is requiring ATPLs at the moment? or are they just "desired"

No time like today to get your ATPL's, there are so many courses you have to do when you are hired for an offshore role that having the ATPLs still hanging over you is a huge distraction. Get them done and out of the way, home study if need be, do one a month and before you know it you have an edge over those in the interview who couldn't be bothered.

I suggest you don't jump into offshore with low hours, bigger aircraft flying less flights result in a long road to acceptance by the clients. An example for Captaincy 3000 total, 1250MEPIC 1500 PIC Turbine. At 150 hours a year with only some of it as ICUS you get the idea!

This is not always the case and you may fall lucky.

Don't count on oil climbing too soon and with all the consolidation happening and aircraft sharing they may just get used to this way of operating.

Good luck, enjoy the journey and get as much varied fun flying under your belt first.

Tail rotor,
One of the most significant changes in recent times is not the hour requirement but the part 61 abolition of the co-pilot IR (and the co-pilot type endorsement). This of course means that these companies will be required to pay twice as much to give someone an IR. for this reason, an IR is becoming a pre-requisite for employment. Of course there will be exceptions but this is where it is heading. And this is not even taking into account the pressure that the downturn in oil and gas is putting on employers. The road is getting even tougher for aspiring MEIFR first officers.

I don't think there's been a job advert yet from the big guys expecting you to already have an IR. They have a pool of qualified guys around that they can pick from for some of the smaller (in comparison) gigs.
I know of guys who didn't have IRs and got jobs in the last round. And guys who didn't even get interviews who did have IRs that they paid for themselves. Expensive gamble...
The time will probably come where they will be a necessity, if everyone goes out and buys their own then that surely will happen faster. But until they start advertising IRs as a requirement for the job, I'd say it's not quite time just yet to invest in one.

Good advice from Phugoyd - enjoy what you're doing, it's important part of the learning curve. And probably the bigger pathway of delivery for your story telling repertoire :)

Can you provide an explanation as to the 'twice as much' statement?

Respectfully, I'm not able to agree on your other assertion regarding the IR becoming a pre-requisite however in some rare cases it will provide a slim advantage if candidates are completely equal in all other areas.
