Good morning all,
I am a student pilot (CPL) and am currently working my way through the Helicopter Performance and Handling Module, whilst at sea for work.
A question i am stuck on is the following;
Take off from a certain HLS is restricted to a maximum weight of 1773kg. The empty weight is 1055kg, and you have 4 passengers and 367lts of usable fuel on board. Ignoring the question of aircraft balance, what is the maximum weight of that may be uplifted in the baggage compartment?
Is there a standard assumed weight for a passenger if no weight is given as i am aware that there is a standard weight (minimum) for the pilot if no weight is given in a question?
Here's where i am at with my equation as i am not sure if they want fuel converted into kg or left as lts?
356kg
HEW 1055kg + fuel (367 x 0.97) + pilot 77.1kg= 1488kg without knowing the passenger weight
Max 1773 - 1488kg = 285kg
or
HEW 1055 + fuel 367lts + pilot 77.1kg = 1499.1kg without knowing the passenger weight
Max 1773 - 1499.1kg = 273.9kg
Thanks for your help in advance.
The 4 answers in the book are: 30kg, 36kg, 100kg and 113kg

Re: Helicopter Performance 206 Long Ranger Question
It would be a guess, but the answer may have more to do with the maximum weight allowed in the baggage compartment as stated in the flight manual.
Or not.
Or not.

Your fuel weight calculation is incorrect. Multiply your litres by .79 not .97.

Re: Helicopter Performance 206 Long Ranger Question
If the pax weight allows it, you can probably lift the max, which from memory 13 years ago, was 250 lb or the nearest is 113kg

I think Eric is probably on the money for that one.

Yep, it seems like one of those 'trick' question. The answer is 113kg as previously suggested which is the max allowable in the baggage compartment.

Re: Helicopter Performance 206 Long Ranger Question
Thanks again to all that helped answer this curve ball quetion.
I have run the numbers again after doing some research and from what you guys had said.
HEW = 1055kg
Fuel = 367 lts (367 x 0.81 = 297.3kg)
Pilot = 77.1kg
Passengers = ??? So assuming passengers are on average weigh 78kg (4 x 78 = 312kg)
Total weight onboard = 1741.4kg
1773 - 1741.1 = 31.9kg
The answer in the text book says its (A) 30kg max baggage allowable.
I have only guessed what the average passenger weight is though and this is the closest I could get to the above answer.
Thanks again for your help it means a lot to a student pilot to be able to get help from those who know
