Aviation watches

Postby agent 99 » Wed May 30 2007, 13:27

I'm in the market for a new watch and would like some info on watches like the Citizen Skyhawk or Nighthawk.
They seem gimmicky to me, but does anyone actually own one and use their features.
Cheers.

Theres only one aviation watch, one that not just holds its value but increases with time, thats the Brietling - Navitimer. Check them out here http://breitling.com/en/

Had the Skyhawk...nice watch but useless if your caught in a region that is not UTC + - on the hour like Central Aus, as it can't handle local time changes in half hour increments without affecting UTC (the only reason for having it in the first place).

Replaced it with a cheapy that has two independant time settings.

G'Day Agent 99,

I used my skyhawk all the time in flight planning calulating fuel usage, ETA etc.

I picked mine up in Dubai for $400US, compared to $1200AUS retail here.

I also used it all the time in the NT, excuse the pun.

Cheers

Seems it might be simpler to get a watch then with dual time. Is the the flight computer on the bezel good enough to use or are you still going to need the real thing?

I had a Black Nighthawk awhile ago, the inside rotating bezel is based on the EA-6B flight computer....

It's a good little tool, just like me

I'm curious about the slide rule on a watch. How practical is it at that size?

I used one the size of a steering wheel for my nav exam, but it still made me go cross-eyed!

The wiz wheel or rather prayer wheel on the Brietling Navitimer, is totally functional, its excellent I use it almost daily for flight planning. It is overall an outstanding eye pleasing watch that you'll be proud to wear, is a conversation piece & pulls a few girlies too.

Hey rotors88, you really love Breitling, don't you?

I must admit that there is something about a good watch. I've got a thing about mechanical watches and would love to own one. The problem is that they aren't cheap and unfortunately these are champagne and lobster tastes when I only have a beer and crisps budget! Anyway...

If you like a really simple layout, have a look at http://www.fortis-watch.com

For a bit more bling and secret agent fantasies, look at http://www.omega.ch/

Both do models with a GMT hand, but they only work with whole hour differences so they won't work properly in SA or NT and a few other places around the world.

If you want something that is really clever, check out http://www.yeswatch.com/
These will handle any time zone and correct for daylight saving time. The display shows sunrise/sunset times, moonrise/moonset times for any location in the world (600 odd pre-programmed cities plus LAT/LON)

My new Casio LA11W. It tells the time, it beeps and it's water resistant. The bloke wanted $34 but I talked him down to $20.

The model number is actually bigger than your watch.

I think the yes watch just needs to tell you, your daily starsign and it would be a winner. :D

Me too, I saved 3 years for mine, you can sometimes pick one up on ebay for half that price (second hand) another rotor head mate of mine picked up a genuine deal for $2500, 6 months old part of a divorce thingy. But they normally hold there value & go up as they get older
