Most Interesting thing you have done in a heli?
I just want to know what great or bad jobs people have had out there in their machines while flying.

mmm. I met a guy in the Atherton Tablelands FNQ who told me he landed on top of The Rock a (long) while back...cant see that happening now...

i think its hard to beat weaving through small rivers below the treeline!

I met a guy in the Atherton Tablelands FNQ who told me he landed on top of The Rock a (long) while back...cant see that happening now...

Yes, one of a few interesting things I have done is flying low level up and down river beds dodging trees, then placing the machine quickly and smoothly so the shooter can get clear shots of deer making hard out for the bush line!

Putting the letters A M P onto the top of Centrepoint Tower in Sydney by 200' longline from a B212.
Weird feeling being in the hover at 1200' with absolutely nothing out there for a reference, except the letter 200' below you on top of the 1000' tower. And landing on the 5th floor rooftop to discuss the job beforehand, weaving around the city buildings to get there on the Sunday morning, and then lifting vertically up 1000' past the tower. Looking up thru the overhead window at the tower was pretty cool. Shame the observation areas were shut down for the job, the tourists would have loved to see the 212 buzzing up past their windows.

Dunno bout the most interesting but certainly the most fun job I did was a fish survey with a couple of environmental guys in a gorge system in the Northern Territory. While they were putting in nets and taking data all I was doing was fishing and swimming ( keeping a close look out for crocs of course). The job went for 4 days so it was quite a good paid holiday I reckon, tho I reckon the 'guest' wins hands down.

Nope, landed there quite a few times myself doing rescues with the RFDS.

Wow, I remember watching that from Grosvenor Place a few years ago. You obviously did a good job as they haven't fallen back off yet . Did you have any involvement with the statues that went up there for the Olympics??

Flying low level avoiding trees, birds and wires great fun. Firing two miniguns and 2.75 inch rockets into a target whilst flying low level avoiding trees, birds and wires - outstanding fun. Doing all this on Night Vision Goggles - Pure stupidity (but totally mind blowing).

Jabberwocky, the statues were put there by a Kamov from Hevilift, flown by Alan Dodds who held a Russian licence.
And on the AMP job in April 98, I was along to keep an eye on the power gauges for Hermann Messerli, the longline specialist for the job.(Don't call him Hermann the German, because he is Swiss!) I can't longline to save myself, just short lines. Vertical reference wasn't needed in my normal job, so i never learned it.

Hmmm.... I'd be real cautious about encouraging guys to fly low and fast for the sheer hell of it, below the trees, especially along windy little creeks and rivers. 1) it's just amazing where some guy has strung a cable. Out in the middle of absolutely nowhere. Remote mining camp, citizen band radios, Ham radios, slings, seismic ops, etc, etc. Lots and lots of fatal wire strike horror stories about stuff like that. 2) Have you really looked at your Height Velocity diagram lately...? It's not just a pretty picture in an old text book that you don't need anymore. It's your LIFE, brother. Fly 'em long enough, something WILL quit. Arriving at Mama Earth at a comfortable flare speed, and at a nice place, having finished your sandwich, as opposed to NOT, is the difference between walking away with a "Phew!" and being shoveled away.
Having said that, plenty, plenty of interesting. Hell, no, fascinating. I really enjoyed Law Enforcement chasing bad guys. Day, night, NVG. Foot pursuits, car chases, drug raids. Camaraderie. Never could get enough of that. Would still be doing that, if it wasn't for low budgets, uncertainty of budget, politics, plummeting economy & falling tax revenue, BS. The most boring, unsatisfying flying ever, was two crew IFR twin turbine, 19 pax, offshore, auto pilot, straight lines, day, autopilot, night, same old, autopilot, same old, ZZZZZZ. Might as well have been a machine. EMS/Medevac had satisfying moments, but a lot of hanging around. Some really, really difficult, moody and burnt out nurses and Med Staff. The wildest flying? Most intense? Lots of flying? Go, baby, go? Without a doubt, the Tuna Fields. Not that I recommend it, because I don't, but I really did enjoy so much of it. The two crew IFR, real serious, well paid, high status, air crew of the future is a Man and a Dog. The man is there to feed the dog. The Dog is intensely trained to bite hell out of the Pilot if he as much as dares to touch anything. The TunaHead driver chasing fish will always be predominantly low-time, experience and flight hours builder. He will wear raggedy shorts, flip flops, a stubble, and a big grin from ear to ear. If he survives, and adjusts to the much greater discipline, and the much thicker rule book of today's mainstream civilian flying, he will look back and realize A) I learned a lot and B) heck, that was fun.
