22 x Army Kiowa’s on GraysOnline

Postby jimiemick » Wed Jan 16 2019, 01:22

Noticed the other day that soon the 22 x army Kiowa’s go up for auction.

Just a random thought

I wonder what sort of hours they have....

What would be required to get them CASA registered.

What could you do with them.

What would they be worth.

What would you do with one!?!?!?

Most likely they could only go under Restricted category. Too many differences from a B206 to get on the civil registry.

You could do private and some airwork type things but only carry "essential crew".

OK just a thought,
Could you register the Kiowa's in Limited category and have fair paying passengers under adventure flights ?

If the current pricing is anything to go buy. I’m buying one of those cabs with full internal fit outs with avionics for $2500 and turning it into a cubby house for the kids

I'll give them $19.00 for the lot.

Re-sell them to a scrappy for $25.00 and make a cool $6.00 on the deal.
Hand in Pants, I'm thinking, my god, that IS huge!!!!!!!!

There’s a big discussion on pee proon and by the sounds of it they aren’t worth a pinch of salt given the mods ,type certification, differences and spares issues.

Far easier to go and by an old trusty civvy 206 plenty on the market cheap and save the hassle and $$.

I can see a few ending up on kids playgrounds :cool_slp:

Was supprised how much they went for given they are not straight forward to put on the register. Anyone know what people have planned for them? Cheers

I personally work on two of them.
Decent conditions machines, some parts replaced but both are flying now and as far I heard, the owners are happy.
Both registered “limited” not for charter/scenic but yes for aerial work.
They mount the Allison -20 so good power!

I am aware of someone who owns two, I have flown one. Great helicopter!

But just to clarify, “limited” is very limited. They are warbirds which are essentially only for adventure flights or private use. No aerial work allowed.

Also, if you plan on flying them, you must be a member of the Australian Warbirds Association as they are administered externally to CASA (although you obviously still need a CASA licence).

Not sure if anyone else is going down the path of creating a restricted type certificate. A little difficult at present as Bell doesn’t want anything to do with them and the army isn’t releasing design documents (so I’ve been told).

Hi bl@ckers,
Thanks for the clarification, I didn’t know that was an association.
As I wrote, I only worked on them and I was surprised about their good condition.
Talking to the client I heard they were looking for some aerial work.
Btw the clear sticker in the cockpit said “ you are flying this aircraft at your own risk”....

I think the main reason for their restrictions is because army doesn’t supply logbook history so we have no idea what they done with them....

Cheers!
