Currently there are three rotary and one fixed wing aircraft conducting a search offshore from Anna Bay.

The final FR24 flight data looks worrying. Fingers crossed for a good outcome

Any further factual updates?
Anyone..
Lots of rumours and arm chair speculation going on behind the scenes.
All respect and condolences intended.

How are you expecting to get factual and not speculation from a forum?
Have they even got the hull yet to be able to conduct an investigation from that side and not the Swiss cheese theory that’s possibly more than likely.
s#!t circumstances regardless.

Flying in the Dark, over water, low on fuel in 50 knot winds. What could possibly go wrong

Probbo, that is exactly what I though when I heard about this incident.

While we don't know what actually happened yet, it reminds me of when I lost two good friends in 2015.

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-04-24/ ... er/9693630

They actually had landed in a field and had played their "get out alive" card. Then elected to push on, to their deaths.

While, I'm not trying to start debate or speculate in anyway, I feel as helicopter pilots, we should all recognise when things are not going well.

We have the added bonus of land anywhere and deal with the repercussions later.

Live to fly another day.

Except over water at night.

The trick is to land somewhere, before you end up over water at night (If not prepared and planning for that situation)

One of the online newspaper reports included comments which indicated the doomed flight did in fact land, then take off again for the fatal segment.
Obviously I can’t comment on the accuracy of this claim.

To be clear Anna Bay is not over water miles from land. It’s on a coastal route to pass Williamtown. You can fly the whole lane over the beach if you want.

Thinking they were near or over the coast. Just not at the end.
Very sad. Hope they recover them for the families soon. :(

I wonder if he had a night rating.
That picture above should be a lesson to all in regards to flying at night (obviously certain industry exempt) or in white out as well as day time bad weather configuration........NEVER turn away out from the mainland
