Hi guys. I just completed the Lateral Transfer process, successfully I might add. I am finishing up my time in the US Army now and will come over October 2013 as an SSO. I am all ears for any advice you can offer.

Thanks,

Steve

Wow, big move Steve. The country is great, but hopefully you will already understand that the Army here is not like the Army there - culturally, capability or size. Any indication about how/where you might be employed?

Practice,

You are right, it is a big move. My first posting will be at Oakey for my first three years, then on to an operational unit after that. I'll drop Luka a PM like you suggested. Thank you.

I think Practice might be 'taking the piss' there Flemister60 - bit of an Australian tradition. Perhaps try posting your questions on here. I'm not sure Luka is the man to help you with this one ;)

Hey Flemister60. How did your move to Australia end up panning out?

Hi guys after some advice on pilot entry and lifestyle into Adf from any older pilots
I'm looking at entering as a pilot, I'm 35 and about to start a family
So I'm weighing up the lifestyle/time away from family vs realizing the lifelong dream
Also moving from the freedom of running my own business to working for someone full time again!
How to best decide if this is right for me for the next 10yrs!
Where have people been based and how much did you move around and how much time away from family was it?
Cheers

Hey, Like any organisation the military has good and not-so-good aspects. If its something you have always thought of doing - then do it. Its really what you make of it. Good luck!

Navy or Army? Big difference in almost every respect.

Either. How do you decide which one you'd like best or which service you'll fit into better?

It's not just a thing like "I think I'll try this for a while to see if I like it".

You gotta show some dedication to serving the country, a willingness to leave the family behind for months at a time while you do courses and tours, be able to change your priorities in life. be prepared to have huge marital stresses when you are forced to choose between wifely peace and the job you desire. be prepared to join the AIDS club - Aviation Induced Divorce Syndrome.

If you are looking way ahead at airlines, go RAAF as they have a heap of good machines of the 737 / Airbus family which translate nicely into the airlines. If your sights are a little lower, go Army for helicopters, or if you really want to get away from the missus go Navy.
